Žuljana

 

Žuljana is an oasis of peace and beauty, situated on the central-southern part of the Pelješac peninsula, in a beautiful sandy bay turned towards west.

The village has approximately 200 inhabitants, mostly occupied with wine making, olive production, fishing and tourism.

Just an hour away from Dubrovnik, this part of the wine growing area of Croatia is inspoilt, lush and rustic.

Žuljana is one of most famous places in the southern part of the Adriatic Coast because  of its numerous sandy and pebble beaches, specially convenient for children because they are shallow and clean. Sunsets in Žuljana are wonderful and each of them is a special experience.The village has a post office, exchange office, a shop,3 restaurants, a night cafe, and 4 minor auto camps and a lot of private rooms and apartments. There are excursions to the neighbouring island of Mljet, walks and bicycle-rides along numerous mountain paths, Dive 'Barbara' offers diving at attractive locations . Žuljana is a haven for fun and relaxation in a pristine environment.

 

This place was mentioned in written documents from the 12th century for the first time, and its name is of Roman origin, after the church of St.Julian. Besides this church there are also churches of St.Nicolas-Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint Martin-the protector of the place celebrated on the 11th November, when a traditional wine-tasting ceremony is organized on the beach, which makes Žuljana especially famous in this part of the region.

 

Tourists discovered Žuljana in 1924 and since then their number has been constantly increasing, though it feels like a wonderful hidden place and remains untouched by the busy world.
